Faith That Dispels Doubt

Doubt always seems to stick its destructive head into all we are trying to do. That’s where faith comes in. Faith isn’t the absence of doubt, but it reaches beyond doubt and toward that which we believe to be true. Or as the writer of Hebrews puts it, “Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see” (11:1).

On the football field, I’m sure our guys had occasional moments of doubt before the game got started. But we had to push that aside and replace our doubts with information we knew to be true. When we created a vision of what the desired outcome would look like and focused on those things that we knew we could accomplish, there was little room left for doubt.

I like the story of the perpetual optimist. He fell off the roof of a ten-story building and still had a smile on his face when he passed the fifth floor on the way down. When someone yelled out the window, “How are you?” he answered, “Okay so far!” That may seem to be an unrealistic faith that flies in the face of scientific knowledge—gravity. But it’s still faith. Many of us don’t know how a plane takes off, stays in the air, and lands, yet we step on the plane in faith that it will fly.

Doesn’t it make even more sense to believe the promises of the Creator of the universe, whose work is visible all around us?

His Promises

“What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”

Have you never heard?

Have you never understood?

The LORD is the everlasting God,

the Creator of all the earth.

He never grows weak or weary.

No one can measure the depths of his understanding.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.
