But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

Moses’ hands became heavy. So do ours often, and we are very apt to lean on Aaron and Hur to hold them up, in other words, to depend on others to help us by their earnestness and steadfastness.
There is something kindling to prayer in being with others who are praying, and all through the Bible this is recognized—even in Gethsemane our dear Lord seems to have wanted human companionship in prayer. But He pressed through that sense of need as He must have done often before, and He can give it to us to press through. He can teach us more than we have yet learned of “access with confidence”; He can draw us deep into His own blessed Presence, even as He drew many a man of old—and among them was Moses—and He can strengthen our hands so that they shall be steady until the going down of the sun.

Pray About It: It’s not uncommon to want fellowship with other human beings as we pray. Moses needed Aaron, Jesus wanted His disciples to stay awake with Him while He prayed. But there is a way to be alone with God and still have a sense of companionship. That way is to realize that at any given moment, Christians are at prayer all around the world. There is, in reality, a 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year prayer chain going on that will continue until the return of Christ. Our sense of camaraderie comes from knowing that as we pray, others are praying too. We are joined with them in the same magnificent work for God.
Today, pray with a sense of oneness with the others who are now praying, this very minute, perhaps even some who have read these words today. You will experience that “kindling” with them of which Amy Carmichael spoke.
The spirit of the Church of God is the spirit of the divine movement. Is she idle, barren, or unfruitful? No; she acts, but her activity is in dependence upon the Spirit of God, who moves and governs her. Just so should it be in her members; that they may be spiritual children of the Church, they must be moved by the Spirit [in prayer].
