They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. Then the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THE PASSAGE in Genesis when, after creating a breathtaking, dazzling, wondrous world full of life, color, sounds, scents, and pleasure, God, the master Artist, was strolling in the Garden of Eden looking for Adam and Eve, the ones for whom He had created such a personal gift.

He was walking along in His Garden, surely admiring it and wanting to know what His children thought —if they were happy, if they appreciated it. He went looking for them in the cool of the day. “Where are you?” He called out, but they were not looking for Him. Sadly, they were hiding from God because they had sinned and felt ashamed.

I receive such pleasure at providing for my own treasured children —cooking, decorating, loving, serving —hoping to be God’s very hands and breath and words to them so that they can better perceive what He is like. I look for them in the garden of my own life: “How do you like what I have provided?” I want to be with them, to enjoy their companionship.

I realized very early in knowing God that the miracle was that He was always looking for me, wanting me to be His companion and friend; to talk, to commune, to live together hand in hand, to delight in the pleasures He had prepared for me.

Just as I desire the companionship of my own children, that is what —amazingly! —He desires of me.

Do you know how much God wants to just live life with you? Even now, He is calling . . . “Where are you?” I pray you’ll answer today.
