You ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

WHEN I WAS JUST OUT OF college and a new staff member with Campus Crusade for Christ, one of my directors gave a powerful talk on the need for missionaries in then-Communist Poland. As he spoke, I felt conviction grow in my heart, and I heard a voice in my head saying, “Those people need us to help them!” When the talk was over and a general invitation was given to join the new team being formed to take the gospel to Poland, I rushed forward, sure I would be one of hundreds who wanted to apply. Instead, I found that I was one of only four.

Because of the great change that God’s love had made in my own life, I was ready to do anything to bring that love to other people. God’s love made me an initiator.

As I began to raise my children, I remembered the call to Poland and the few who responded. I resolved that my children would become first responders and initiators. I wanted them to be the ones who would hear the call and step forward to help. I wanted them to be active members of God’s Kingdom. I knew that meant training them to take initiative in every area of their lives. As Winston Churchill said, “The price of greatness is responsibility.”
