Mom Heart Moments #76

David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were embittered, each one because of his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.

1 Samuel 30:6

I HAVE WORKED IN MINISTRY FOR forty-two years, raised four children to adulthood, and navigated thirty-six years of marriage. All this has meant learning to pace myself in life’s journey. Learning to listen to myself has helped me to identify the danger signals when I am running low on resources and in need of refueling. Sudden outbursts of anger, feelings of impatience, or quickly building frustration are sure signs that I have exceeded my body and mind’s capacity to live life well.

Here are just a few habits I have found essential to sustaining myself for the long haul:

  1. Eating nourishing, healthy, sustaining food is foundational.
  2. Getting physical exercise helps build strength and burn off tension. Walking outdoors especially is therapy for my whole self.
  3. Getting sufficient sleep is essential to lasting well.
  4. Having private quiet times each day gives me the opportunity to center myself and “fill my cup.”
  5. Setting aside the Sabbath for rest or building in some restoration spots helps me keep going. So does getting away from normal responsibilities by taking a weekend with a friend or family member or going on a weekend trip alone.
  6. Planning regular table times with friends who fill me up and bring me joy is an investment that is necessary to keep going over many years.
  7. Making time to laugh, play, and celebrate life with my family and friends (ideally over a delicious meal) keeps me thankful and relieves stress.

What rhythm of life do you prefer to set up so that you can invest in time with the Lord?
