Many followed him, and he healed them all.

What an amazing number of hideously disgusting sicknesses must have thrust themselves under the eyes of Jesus! Yet we never read He was disgusted but, instead, He patiently attended to every case. What an unprecedented variety of evils must have congregated at His feet! What smelly, sickening open sores He must have encountered! Yet He was always prepared for every new facet of evil and was victorious over evil regardless of its form.

Evil arrows could fly from wherever they will, but He always quenched their flaming power. Whether the heat of fever, the cold of poor circulation, the tremors of palsy, the raging of insanity, the filth of leprosy, or the darkness of blindness, all knew the power of His word and fled at His command. Regardless of the disease, He triumphed over evil and received honor from the captives He delivered.

He came, He saw, He conquered—everywhere. This is still true this morning. Whatever my specific problem may be, my beloved Physician can heal me. And regardless the condition of others whom I remember in prayer this moment, I can have hope in Jesus that He is able to heal them of their sins. Whether my child, my friend, or my dearest loved one, I can have hope for each and every one when I simply remember the healing power of my Lord.

Even when it comes to my own situation, however severe my struggle with sin and sickness, I can still “be of good cheer” (Matt. 9:2 KJV). He who once walked this earth, dispensing healing as He went, still dispenses His grace and works miracles among people today. Let me earnestly go to Him right now.

Let me praise Him this morning as I remember how He worked His spiritual cures that brought Him the most renown. He took our sicknesses upon Himself, for “by his wounds we are healed” (Isa. 53:5). The church here on earth is full of souls healed by our beloved Physician, and the inhabitants of heaven itself now confess, “He healed them all” (Matt. 12:15 ESV).

Come then, my soul, and tell the world of the goodness of His grace. Let it “be for the LORD’S renown, for an everlasting sign, which will not be destroyed” (Isa. 55:13).

Each of us had a sickness unto death—the sickness of sin. Thankfully, the great Physician “came to seek and to save” sinners, as Jesus Himself said while visiting Zacchaeus, the hated tax collector. Ironically, it is in the story of Matthew, another tax collector, where Jesus equates a sick person’s need of a doctor to a sinner’s need of a savior.

While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and “sinners” came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?” On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick…For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

I thank You, dear God, for Jesus—the “balm in Gilead” (Jer. 8:22) and my great Physician.
