How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.

Psalm 119:9 – 10

Oh, to live according to God’s Word and to never stray from his commands! Yesterday we allowed the Bible to speak directly to us regarding a godly perspective on our afflictions. What great lessons we learned from the Word of God. Let’s continue! Romans 5:3 – 4 states, “We rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” We learn here that God is more concerned with our character than our comfort! Psalm 107:17 states, “Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.” This shows us that suffering can be a chastisement from God for sin or if we are rebellious against him. Psalm 119:67 says, “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.” This is a lesson on how obedience and self-control is learned from suffering.

When it comes to embracing God’s will for our lives, it simply must start with lessons like these. Psalm 37:14 – 15 teaches us that suffering is a part of the struggle against evil. Second Thessalonians 1:6 teaches that suffering is part of the struggle for the kingdom of God. Second Timothy 2:8 – 9 reminds us that suffering is simply part of the struggle of the gospel. Lastly, 2 Timothy 2:12 encourages us — endurance of suffering is given as a cause for reward.

Are you tired and weary? Do you feel overwhelmed by disappointment? God will strengthen your heart today as you ponder these Bible lessons. Ask the Holy Spirit to apply each one of these truths — as well as yesterday’s lessons — to your heart. Ask him to transform you by the power of his Word. And then, trust him.

I hunger and thirst after your Word, dear Lord. Thank you that the Bible has so many lessons for me to learn.
