When God Feels Far Away

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV)

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8, NIV)

I stared at the numbers on the clock, then at the ceiling, then back at the clock. I asked why a thousand times that night. “God, why can’t I feel Your presence?” Then I wished for an immediate answer. If you know the emptiness of that kind of moment, you know words can’t quite capture it.

Maybe you believe God is listening and you know His promises say He is near, but your feelings say otherwise, and they’re ruling your heart like dictators. Prayers that once flowed freely feel mechanical. The peace you used to know has been replaced by uncertainty and a quiet, gnawing doubt. In spiritual deserts like this, it’s easy to wonder whether God has moved—or worse, whether He’s abandoned you altogether.

That’s exactly the lie the enemy wants you to believe: You should be afraid, because God has left you on your own.

But look at where Deuteronomy 31:6 was spoken. Moses said these words to the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land without him. For forty years, they had followed visible guidance: a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. Now they faced the loss of the only leader most of them had ever known. If anyone had reason to feel that God’s presence had grown distant, it was this generation standing at the edge of everything unfamiliar.

Into that uncertainty, Moses spoke an unchanging truth, “the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Notice he did not say, “God will be with you if you can feel Him.” God’s presence was never tied to their emotions or their circumstances. It was anchored to His character. He goes with you, Moses said—and a few verses later, he says God also goes before you, behind, beside, and ahead. There is no square of ground you can step onto that He has not already claimed.

God’s Word tells us that He is with you always and He will never leave you alone. Your feelings are real, but they do not tell the full story. Feelings can tell you God is far. Faith says the opposite.

The night I asked God why I couldn’t sense Him, I didn’t experience any kind of spiritual high or emotional rush. God answered me by proving Himself faithful. It took me some time to learn to trust His track record over my temporary feelings. The desert season did not mean God had checked out. It meant I was being invited to trust His Word more than I trusted anything else.

So what do you do when God feels far away? You preach truth to your own heart instead of letting your feelings preach to you. You hold to His promise: He has not left. He will not leave.

Friend, no matter how distant God feels today, He is as near as the very breath in your lungs—because He is Yahweh, the God who sustains your every breath.

Prayer:

Father, I don’t feel Your presence right now. Doubt sits heavily on my heart. Thank You for Your promise never to leave me or forsake me. Help me trust Your character over my emotions. Give me strength to keep seeking You in this desert, and eyes to see that You’ve been here the whole time. I believe You are with me. Amen.
