When Hope Feels Lost
When Hope Feels Lost
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13, NIV)
“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4, NIV)
I remained at my mother’s grave and could not move my feet. The cemetery workers waited at a respectful distance, but I just sat there. The empty ache inside me felt as wide as the heavens stretched overhead. Hope, it seemed, had been lowered into the ground along with my mom.
Have you ever stood in a place like this? Perhaps it wasn’t a grave. Maybe it was the moment a dream finally dissolved, or a door closed you were sure would remain open. Loss carves spaces in our lives that nothing seems able to fill again. In the emptiness, you feel a particular ache; it’s the strange, quiet gap where hope used to live.
The battlefield of loss is where hope so often takes its heaviest casualties. When grief wounds us, our defenses weaken, and the enemy presses his advantage with one of his cruelest lies: all hope is lost. You will never feel peace again!
Romans 15:13 names God: “the God of hope.” He is not a God who occasionally hands out hope. No, He is the God who is the source and the substance of hope. That distinction rescued me on a day that I stood empty-handed, unable to manufacture even a flicker of hope on my own. I started to understand that hope was never my job to produce. Hope is God’s to give.
The hardest part after Mom died was showing up to God with empty hands and an empty heart. Some days, trust was nothing more than a low, “I don’t understand this, God, but I’m still here.” God didn’t need my abundance; He just needed me to turn toward Him.
I love that this verse doesn’t offer a careful sprinkle of hope, just barely enough to limp through. It promises that you may “overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” An overflow. Hope that doesn’t trickle but spills over because God’s own Spirit pours it in.
God’s Spirit says my joy and peace are available to you. By the power of His Spirit, hope rises again. The overflow comes “as you trust in him.” As you trust.
How do you live this out when hope feels lost? You stop demanding that you feel hopeful, and you bring your emptiness to the God of hope. You let Him be the source, so you don’t have to be.
You trust Him, and you let the Holy Spirit do the filling.
Friend, the enemy wants you to be certain that hope is gone for good. But our God specializes in finding what was lost and reclaiming what looked surrendered. Your hope is not buried. The God of hope Himself holds it.
Prayer:
Lord, I’m standing where the hope feels buried. The enemy whispers that this emptiness will last forever, but I choose to trust You, the God who promises. When I cannot muster up hope, fill me with Your joy and peace, as I believe You. Holy Spirit, pour Your power into my depleted spirit until hope flows again. I trust in Your unchanging nature. Amen.
Today’s Battle Cry: My God is the source of hope. As I trust Him, the Spirit makes hope overflow.
