Never Too Busy

The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.

My dad was a high school English teacher. Most weeknights, after dinner was over and the dishes were done, he would grade papers in his “home office”—a metal desk and a filing cabinet at the bottom of the stairs of our unfinished basement. I would often head down the stairs myself in the evenings to sharpen a pencil, to search for my cat, Cricket—or simply to talk to my dad.

I can’t remember a single conversation we had, but I do remember this: No matter how high the stack of essays he needed to grade, Dad would always stop what he was doing when he heard me clomping down those stairs. I can still picture him, wrapped in an afghan or wearing his jacket to ward off the basement chill, putting down his pen and turning toward me when he saw me hit that bottom step. He was never too busy for me.

Without preaching and without my knowing it, my dad was showing me what our heavenly Father is like—always searching for the one who seeks Him out. He longs to spend time with His children, and He is never preoccupied or too busy with more important stuff to listen to us.

I have a wonderful dad, but he is not infallible. God the Father, however, is perfect—perfectly loving, perfectly powerful, and perfectly wise. Do you need direction? Ask Him for guidance. Do you wonder if you matter? Seek Him out. Do you struggle with fear? Cry out to Him.

Your heavenly Father is near you, and He is just waiting to hear your voice and respond to your need.

Rest Assured

Abba Father, how thankful I am to know that I can come to You anytime. No matter how unworthy or lost I feel, You are waiting to fill me with Your presence, peace, and love.
