Talking Away The Stress
Talking Away the Stress
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
I had plenty to do and a lot on my mind. I felt convinced that I wouldn’t be able to focus until I got some peace. I called a friend whom I often prayed with, but we spent more time discussing problems than bringing all that was on our hearts to God. I poured out my frustrations in an e-mail to a Christian friend from work, and then when the phone rang, I seized the opportunity to rehash everything again. I set the phone down at almost 9:00 p.m. Instead of feeling more relaxed about my circumstances, I felt guilty for wasting so much time.
How often had I criticized other family members for turning to television, the computer, or sleep when life felt out of control? Like them, I was searching for a false source of peace. Instead of turning to a screen or a pillow, I turned to the phone and e-mail, chattering away hours and walking away just as discontent.
Now, with regret piled on top of what was already going on, I felt even worse than when I started the day. God, help me to make up the time, I prayed silently. I began praying through everything that had driven me to the phone. The calm I longed for came, finally.
Lord, help me start here next time, and never let me forget the consequences of seeking comfort in the wrong places.
As believers, we know where true peace comes from, so why do we run so quickly to time wasters like the television, the computer, gadgets, or gossip? Isaiah’s words remind us that God promises peace not to those who zone out in front of the television or who run around in a blur, but to those whose minds are steadfast. The assurance that comes after times of prayer can serve as a reminder of what we gain when we seek Him above all else.
Rest Assured
Lord, why do I expect to find peace in anything but You? Help me to run to You first, before anyone or anything else.
Rest in Him: Isaiah 26:3-7
