WE ARE HIS

a prayer to open

Here’s my heart, Lord. Speak what is true.

Here’s my life, Lord. Speak what is true.

Shout with joy to the LORD, all the earth!

Worship the LORD with gladness.

Come before him, singing with joy.

Acknowledge that the LORD is God!

He made us, and we are his.

We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving;

go into his courts with praise.

Give thanks to him and praise his name.

For the LORD is good.

His unfailing love continues forever,

and his faithfulness continues to each generation.

How do you introduce yourself when you first meet someone? Is it often based on your relationship to someone else—being so-and-so’s spouse or so-and-so’s friend? Relationship to others defines us in so many ways. But in this psalm, our most fundamental identity is established: “He made us, and we are his” (verse 3). However else we may define, introduce, or perceive ourselves, we are first and foremost God’s. How might our lives be shaped if we were to wake up each morning and go to bed each night reminding ourselves of this truth?

• What emotions do you feel when you read and receive the truth that you are God’s?
• What does it mean that you are his? How does this truth influence your view of yourself? How does it influence your interactions with others? What might your relationships look like if you felt secure as God’s beloved?

I am yours, Lord. Above all else, I am yours. Remind me of this truth throughout each day. I forget so quickly, sometimes at the slightest criticism or difficulty. Help me remember when I open my eyes in the morning and as I drift off to sleep at night that I am yours. Allow this truth to sink deeply into my soul. Let it mark my actions and reactions and drive my thoughts and words. I am yours. Above all else, I am yours. Amen.
