Do Your Thing

“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

I worked at a summer camp for years and years, and when I picture taking care of one another, I think of a game we used to play at camp. We had those in-ground trampolines, and the girls would line the edges with their hands up, spotting the girl who was jumping. When it was your turn, you’d bounce and dance and do crazy spins, whatever you wanted. The rest of us would sing, “Hey Sam, do your thing, do your thing. Hey Sam, do your thing, do your thing.” And when Sam was done, she’d call the name of the next girl, who would jump into the center and start her silly jumps and dance moves, and we’d sing to her: “Hey Taylor, do your thing, do your thing.”

That’s how it’s supposed to be: you get the courage to do your thing because the people you love and trust are telling you, “Do your thing! Do that thing you were made to do.” They’ve got their hands up; they’re protecting you. You’re safe because of them. And they just keep reminding you to do your thing.
