Knocking

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

—Revelation 3:20

The image from Revelation 3 of Jesus standing at the door of our hearts and knocking is such a beautiful image, isn’t it? I wonder sometimes if we make it too narrow. We save that image for the moment of conversion. But what if Jesus is back again every morning, like a kind neighbor, knocking gently, Can I walk with you today?

That’s the pattern all through scripture. He’s always there, knocking, ready to tell a new story—of identity, purpose, love, future, redemption. God changed your story the day you met him, and he’s obsessed with life, wholeness, healing, putting broken things back together again. He is obsessed with abundance, abandon, great love, great possibility. So many of us choose to live in darkness, defined by our brokenness, letting our failures hang around our necks like nametags announcing, This is all I am. This pain is who I am.

It’s not true. Your pain doesn’t define you. Your failures don’t define you. Your createdness defines you. Christ in his goodness defines you. God loves you, forgives you, and wants to walk with you, through prayer and his word and community.
