Someday

Someday

All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.

Proverbs 14:23

Last Monday, I registered to run the Chicago Marathon with Team World Vision. I’ve been talking about this for a long time, and there are a million reasons that make now the right time. Because I want to get over my fear. Because I believe that discipline and fearlessness in one area can spill over into all sorts of other areas, and I could use a whole lot more of both in this season. Because it’s been a hard winter and spring, and sometimes you have to do something a little bit radical to move yourself on to a new place. And because the cold air and the sound of my feet on the ground sometimes pound away the sadness a little bit, and I like that feeling.

Another reason: because I’m trying to remove the word “someday” from my vocabulary. I’ve always said I’ll run a marathon someday, and then I make a plan—first this, then this, then after that, marathon. But my life looks so different than I thought it would this year. There’s nothing standing in the way of me running the marathon this fall, instead of the next or the next or, honestly, never.

“SOMEDAY” CAN be a seductive word. It carries intent and promise, that certain things will eventually be part of our lives. But it also lets us off the hook. Is there anything in your life that’s living in the distant cloud of “someday”? What’s keeping you from moving and working toward it now?
