The Indwelling Christ

IN WORD Think of that. This historical Jesus who walked Palestine nearly two thousand years ago, who impacted the world as no other teacher ever has, who performed amazing feats of healing, deliverance, and provision, and who is the giver of eternal life, is the same person who pledges to live in us who believe in Him. Are we conscious of His presence? Do we realize the incredible treasure that we have within us? Or do we keep Him buried deep down inside, unaware of the power and the pleasure that’s available in His promise?
The eternal Godhead is somehow present, not in our natural selves, which are corrupt and lifeless, but in our born-again natures that are alive to God through faith. The Holy Spirit can make us aware of His presence in our conflicts with others; we can be aware of His presence in our hours of great need; and we can be aware of His presence in the routines of daily life. We might sometimes make this reality practically irrelevant by ignoring its implications, but His promise is real. He is there to be known and to be seen.
IN DEED How can we know His presence? By love and obedience—two sides of the same coin that Jesus sets before His disciples in verse 21. To obey Him is to love Him, and to love Him is to know His presence in a deeper, fuller way than many Christians ever experience.
The people who are most aware of God’s presence in their lives are the ones who love Jesus with a passion and who have abandoned all disobedience to Him. God uses them without reservation. He is “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20). May we each find this to be true in ourselves.
