Let the Light Shine

Once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!

Ephesians 5:8

In Amish country of the Midwest, you never know what kind of weather to expect in February. One day a storm could be howling, and a few days later the sun will peek out and raise the temperature above freezing. For many Amish these “warmer” days mean added chores that haven’t gotten done during the hard winter months. Laundry doesn’t wait for good weather, but when the sun shines, an Amish wife may add coats to her usual wash loads and hang them outside to dry. She might also clean the windows. It’s only when the sun shines that the dirt from the snow and rain becomes visible on the glass.

Isn’t that like our souls? We don’t see how dirty we are until God’s light shines in. For many years, before I became a follower of Christ, I considered myself a pretty good person. Once I was a Christian, I had hope and peace like I’d never had before. But at the same time, the light of God’s truth revealed my sinful habits. Jesus wants to clean us up so we become people of light!

Romans 13:12 says, “The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living.” Once we remove our dark deeds like dirty clothes and live right, we begin to shine as if we are wearing shining armor, which protects us just like right living does.

Has God’s Spirit been pointing out sinful habits in you? Ask Him to guide you in right living so that you may shine for His glory.

Dear heavenly Father, shine Your light into my heart, and point out any dirt that You’d like me to deal with. I know this is not to bring condemnation in my life but rather to clean me up so I shine for You!
