The Gift of Children

Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him.

Psalm 127:3

One of the most important principles that Amish parents live by is to make their children feel as if they belong, they are needed, and they are loved. Many of their life choices revolve around raising children who will love and serve God—and their fellow human beings.

“A family that works together, grows together. Amish families spend a lot of time together and try to keep their work close to home. Children are valued as gifts from God, wanted and enjoyed. They’re included in all of Amish life—from barn raisings to three-hour church services,” says my friend, Amish novelist Suzanne Woods Fisher.

In our society, we often show favoritism to our children. Who wouldn’t? Amish parents don’t spoil or dote on their children. They don’t want their children to feel better than others—they want them to feel connected with others. They make children feel special by playing with them in groups, choosing to sit down with their families—their children—at meals, and providing their undivided attention.

Society today often takes a different view. When did we decide that children came with a cost instead of being a blessing? When did they become a bother rather than a joy? When did we decide that loving many children would mean less love for ourselves?

“God blessed them and said, ‘Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground,’” (Genesis 1:28). Following this verse doesn’t mean that every family needs to fill a minivan, but we should consider all children gifts from God. We need to do our part to let them know their value in God’s eyes and in ours.

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of children. May I always look for the good children bring rather than the cost. Help my love for children to grow and expand.
