Washing One Another’s Feet

Washing One Another’s Feet

[Jesus] got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.

John 13:4-5

One part of the Amish Communion service that is not common in many other denominations is foot washing. Chairs are set up in front of the church and buckets of warm water and towels are provided. Older men wash the feet of older men. Younger men wash the feet of younger men. Women do the same; those close in age are matched up.

Since the Communion service and foot washing are solemn observances, even afterward, people are subdued. They leave quietly and contemplate how what they have just experienced can apply to everyday life.

During the time of Jesus, men and women wore sandals and walked dusty roads. When people had guests, they provided water so the guests could wash their feet. In Genesis 18:4, Abraham offered water for his guests, who were visiting angels. In Genesis 43:24, Joseph’s steward provided water for his brothers before their banquet. Yet Jesus not only provided the water, He also washed His disciples’ feet. His example showed His willingness to humble Himself and serve us in unconditional love. He desires that we do the same: “Since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you” (John 13:14-15).

Chances are, unless you’re a mom of little ones, you aren’t going to wash someone’s feet today, but are you willing to serve unconditionally in other ways? Think of something you can do for someone you love today. Now think of something you can do for someone else, someone who won’t even expect it. As Jesus did, go and do.

Dear heavenly Father, so many times I come before You as if You’re a stern Father who is annoyed by my presence. Thank You for Jesus’ example, which gives me a glimpse of Your extravagant, giving love.
