God’s Free Gift

Paul wrote the book of Romans to the believers in Rome before he ever visited there. The church in Rome was probably started by Jews who were in Jerusalem at Pentecost and then took the gospel to Rome.

In the book of Romans, Paul explains the gospel: all people are sinners in need of a Savior, and salvation is available only by grace. Grace is being given something we have not earned and don’t deserve. God showed grace to us when he sent his own Son to die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin.

We are saved when we completely trust Jesus for our salvation because of his death and resurrection. This salvation isn’t deserved, and it can’t be earned. Doing good things is fine, but they don’t get us to heaven. Only believing in Jesus and accepting him as Savior gets us into heaven.

Paul explains it in Romans 6:23: “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” A gift isn’t earned; it is accepted. And God offers eternal life in heaven as a gift through Jesus.
