How Brave Are You?

Q: The godly are as bold as what?

• a. a mighty soldier
• b. a lion
• c. a ruling king

Who is “king of the beasts”? The lion is, of course. Lions are strong and courageous, with the exception of the lion in The Wizard of Oz, who goes to the Emerald City to ask the wizard for courage.

How do the godly become bold? By having confidence in God. “God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7).

In the New Testament, the apostle Paul was known for his boldness. First he was bold for wrong reasons, and he persecuted Christians. That was a wrong use of courage. The righteous are bold in the way they live because of God’s strength and because they are doing the Lord’s work.

After Jesus spoke to Paul on the road to Damascus, Paul was changed, and he became courageous in his witness for Christ even though he was beaten, stoned, chased out of cities, and arrested. Peter and John were bold witnesses too. Acts 4:13 says, “The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.” They were bold because they had absolute confidence that what they were doing was right.

Are you courageous like Paul, Peter, and John were? God has given you that boldness. It’s up to you to put it into practice.

As a child of God, you can have courage instead of fear when facing new situations, unexpected circumstances, or the class bully. God’s boldness doesn’t make you act foolishly but gives you confidence as you grow in your faith day by day.
