The book of Acts continues where the Gospels left off. Luke, a doctor, addressed his Gospel, Luke, and this book of history, Acts, to a man named Theophilus. Luke’s Gospel covers Jesus’ time on earth. The book of Acts covers the first 30 years after Jesus went back to heaven. After Jesus’ resurrection, he spent 40 days on earth teaching his disciples. He was preparing them to take the gospel into all the world.

The book of Acts covers the exciting time when the church began and the early believers banded together into a community. Life wasn’t easy for these early believers. They were imprisoned, beaten, stoned, and ridiculed. This opposition forced some of them to move away, and that resulted in the gospel being taken to new places too.

The important thing to remember is that the amazing courage of the early Christians and the growth of the church was through the Holy Spirit’s power, not the work of individual Christians. Men such as Peter, John, James, Stephen, Philip, Paul, Barnabas, Silas, Timothy, and Ananias of Damascus allowed God’s spirit to work in them and through them in order to fan the spark of Christianity into a flame that spread throughout what is now Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Although times have changed, God is still looking for believers who will allow his Spirit to work through them in amazing ways in order to get the gospel to those who need to hear it.
