Think First

Q: According to Proverbs 13, what can ruin everything?

  • a. cheating to get ahead
  • b. opening your mouth
  • c. stealing from a neighbor

Have you ever been told to think before you speak? If you have, it was probably because you had said something that wasn’t entirely appropriate or useful. Thinking before you speak is a good habit to learn.

When you stop and think before saying something, ask yourself if what you’re about to say will build another person up or tear the person down. Will it encourage or discourage? Does it show love and kindness to the other person?

Here are some of the things that should be eliminated:

  • Gossiping—spreading rumors or negative information only hurts others.
  • Cutting down—making fun of someone or tearing someone down with words causes deep wounds.
  • Name-calling—calling others names never helps a situation. It only leads to hurt feelings.
  • Lying—being dishonest to cover up a mistake or avoid punishment is always wrong.

What are some good uses of words?

  • Explaining something to someone who doesn’t understand
  • Encouraging someone who is feeling down
  • Cheering on a teammate, friend, or even someone you don’t like very well
  • Praising someone for a good deed or job well done
  • Praying for a friend or family member
  • Praising God for who he is
  • Thanking someone for what he or she did for you

There are both good and bad ways to use words. Choose the good today.
