Heart Disease And Disease Of The Heart
Heart Disease And Disease Of The Heart
“O LORD,” I prayed, “have mercy on me. Heal me, for I have sinned against you.” Psalm 41:4
Sickness has many causes. Unsanitary conditions, genetics, poor diet, lack of exercise, and lack of proper medical care can all cause disease or worsen the outcome of an illness. When sin entered the world, it not only separated us from God, but it also caused or contributed to many of the conditions that foster disease and illness.
Today, with our knowledge of biology, we put up a good fight against many of these disease contributors, but we often don’t consider another cause to our pain that modern medicine can’t treat.
When a patient complains of heart pain, sometimes it’s not a physical problem—it might be better described as a heartfelt pain. The heart is suffering, but it isn’t sick from a disease; it’s sick from a lack of repentance or reconciliation. Whether the cause of the pain is a broken relationship with a loved one, private anger aimed at a coworker, or unmet dreams and desires, the illness isn’t seated in the body; it’s in the soul.
This kind of sickness can create legitimate medical symptoms such as stress, high blood pressure, increased cortisol levels, or chest pain. Though these sins of the spiritual heart can lead to real physical disease, the root of the problem is that the patient’s sin is interfering with the person’s healthy relationship with God.
If you recognize these soul symptoms in your life, the first step to a healthy relationship with your Creator is to ask for forgiveness. It’s a simple step in his treatment plan, but it’s a hard one for many people to take. When you ask for forgiveness, you can know that God’s forgiveness is complete and his healing starts immediately. His treatment brings peace and hope for the future. That’s where the journey to both spiritual and physical health begins.
TODAY’S RX
A doctor can perform a checkup on your body, but you have to perform a spiritual checkup on the condition of your heart and soul.
Lord, forgive me for the anger and resentment I harbor in my heart. Help me release this weight I’ve been carrying, and wash me clean with your Word.
