Seeking With Focus

Seeking With Focus

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33

Today’s Scripture verse contains a promise: If we seek God first and above all else and live accordingly, our needs will be satisfied.

To seek is to journey and to quest. Seeking is something that must be done daily and without distraction. When my kids were little, they played hide-and-seek. The child who won was always the one who was the least distracted and most single-minded while searching for the others. We need that same kind of focus when we seek God’s Kingdom.

To live righteously is to live like a bird dog who faithfully points toward the object of its master’s desire. The dog never thinks about shortcuts or beating around the bush. Instead, the dog locks steadfastly onto the target and goes straight toward the desired destination. Likewise, we should be straightforward in our words and actions. This includes treating others as we would like to be treated.

As for our needs, God says that he will give us what we need. When we think about how God cares for our needs, it’s easy to think of him as a genie in a bottle who grants us wishes when we hand him our list. But who knows what we actually need better than God?

Our children may continually ask for sweets, but as loving and wise parents, we provide for their greater need—a balanced and nutritious diet. Parents know what their children need better than their children know themselves. Even when our children unceasingly insist that they need something different, we, as their parents, focus on what is best for them.

Seek.

Live righteously.

Receive what God gives you to meet your needs.
