Words Of Truth - The One Year Book of Hope
Words Of Truth
Make them pure and holy by teaching them your words of truth. –John 17:17
A big question these days seems to be whether our sources for news are truthful or bent by bias. We live in a world where “spin,” half-truths, and even outright lies swirl around us, making us cynical and skeptical. We are tempted to think there is no one we can trust to tell us the truth, no place we can go where the air is free of deceit.
But when we open the Word of God, we breathe in a completely different atmosphere. There we discover truth, reality, sincerity, and an absence of ulterior motives and hidden agendas. We can believe everything God says because God is the personification of truth. And his words are not merely informational, they are powerful. Through the Holy Spirit, the truth of Scripture works on us and in us, renewing us and shaping us, healing us and cleansing us. Have you experienced the power of the Word of God to lift your burden, cleanse your conscience, and change your perspective?
We do not have to plod through the pages of Scripture to determine what is true and what is error, what we’re willing to agree with and what we can’t accept. There is never a disconnect between what Scripture teaches and the reality of the world we live in. Therefore, as my pastor Ray Ortlund says, we are invited to “swallow it whole.” We come to the Word of God in humility, seeking to understand what it is saying so that we can allow its truth to permeate our intellect, intuitions, and interior life. God’s truth has the power not only to withstand the skepticism and attacks of worldly wisdom, but also to transform worldly people, changing how we think and how we live, making us pure.
Many people set out on a journey toward truth under the assumption that it is inside themselves or that it can be whatever they determine it to be. But if we’re going to discover the truth in this life, we need a word from outside ourselves, a word from God himself. And that is what he has given us. “The law of the LORD is perfect” (Psalm 19:7). Will you embrace his words as true?
Word of Truth, what a comfort to know I can rest in the reliability of your words and relish the ability of your Word to change how I think and how I live. Free me from the deception of the evil one and from deceiving myself so I can know the purity and holiness that your truth inspires.
