Almighty God, Thy Word Is Cast

Almighty God, Thy Word Is Cast

Almighty God, Thy word is cast

Like seed into the ground;

Now let the dew of heav’n descend

And righteous fruits abound.

Let not the foe of Christ and man

This holy seed remove,

But give it root in ev’ry heart,

To bring forth fruits of love.

Let not the world’s deceitful cares

The rising plant destroy,

But let it yield a hundredfold

The fruits of peace and joy.

Oft as the precious seed is sown,

Thy quick’ning grace bestow,

That all whose souls the truth receive

Its saving pow’r may know.

JOHN CAWOOD (1775–1852)

IN OUR DAY God’s Word goes forth in many different ways, in ways that John Cawood would never have imagined. It is broadcast on radio and TV, produced in movies and recordings, and it may even come over your phone lines to your personal computer. God’s Word is cast in many new ways, but hearts still need to be ready to receive it.

Our own hearts need to be tilled like good soil for the truth that God is casting there. That is why many Christians observe a “quiet time” in their personal Bible reading. It’s not just a verse or two grabbed on the run, but a seed received, planted, surrounded with the soil of prayer. Why not memorize the first stanza of this hymn and pray it each time you ponder the Scriptures?

* * *

A farmer went out to plant some seeds. As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath. . . . Other seeds fell on shallow soil. . . . Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted!

Matthew 13:3-5, 7-8
