For Thy Mercy And Thy Grace

For Thy Mercy and Thy Grace

For Thy mercy and Thy grace,

Constant through another year,

Hear our song of thankfulness,

Father and Redeemer, hear!

Dark the future; let Thy light

Guide us, bright and morning star:

Fierce our foes and hard the fight;

Arm us, Savior, for the war.

In our weakness and distress,

Rock of strength, be Thou our stay;

In the pathless wilderness,

Be our true and living way.

Keep us faithful, keep us pure,

Keep us evermore Thine own;

Help, O help us to endure;

Fit us for the promised crown.

HENRY DOWNTON (1818–1885)

AS WE COME to the end of one year and the beginning of a new one, look at what God has done in the past year. Have there been challenges He has helped you through? Joys Hes has brought you? Sorrows in which He has comforted you? Thank God for the year past with all its ups and downs.

Look also at the future. What does the next year hold? Try to discover what sort of excitement God might have in mind for you. Think about how you might grow in Him and serve Him in the coming year.

The Bible says that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). The strength He provided for you this year can be counted on again in the next. He will “be our true and living way” in the year ahead.

* * *

Those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion; they will not be defeated but will endure forever. Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people, both now and forever.

Psalm 125:1-2
