Casting A New Vision

Casting a New Vision

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives.

Colossians 3:16

“Oh, this space is perfect!” I exclaimed as I toured her new apartment, taking in the beautifully decorated space for the first time. My friend and her husband have downsized, and after decades of hosting hundreds of people in their large home, I could tell this move was a little hard. She spoke warmly of the move and of their home, but there was a hint of wistfulness in her voice.

As we moved through her new rooms, I spoke not of the smaller square footage but dreamed aloud of the endless possibilities for continued hospitality without the work of maintaining a house that had become a bit too much. I pointed out the beautiful view of the wooded acreage just beyond their small balcony and listened as she told me about the common room that could be reserved for bigger gatherings. I turned to her in excitement and said it again, “This is absolutely perfect for you guys!”

She paused for a long minute before wrapping me in a fierce hug and whispering in my ear how much she loved me. Releasing me, she confessed that she had been struggling and that the enemy of our souls had been whispering lies to her about this move, about this apartment, about how she could not host in such a small space.

She simply needed a friend to view the situation with fresh eyes, a woman who pointed out all the promise of the future despite it looking a bit different from what she had previously known. She needed someone to speak truth and life over her and over her new situation louder than the enemy’s whispered lies. And that’s what we are called to do as women who follow Christ. We are called to draw near to Jesus, to know who and what he is—and then liberally pour out that wisdom on the women around us. We are to be hope bringers, vision casters, and truth tellers, pointing women always back to Jesus.
