Don’t Let Fear Stop You

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

I didn’t know many of the women very well when I invited them to my house for a book club. I just kept having the thought that I should host a book club and invite a few of the moms from my daughter’s dance studio.

I sent the message hesitantly, unsure if any of them would be interested in being a part of the group. My fears were quickly alleviated as several responses started coming in.

“Yes! I’d love to!”

“Thanks for inviting me!”

“What can I bring?”

All day my phone kept dinging with new messages. I quickly came up with a date that worked for most women and sent them the information on the book and the time we would meet.

At first I was excited, but as the month went by and the date began to loom closer, once again my own insecurities began to rise: What if it’s a flop? What if no one connects? What if this is just a terrible idea? Each time I would combat the negative thought with the reminder that I’d been obedient to the small nudge from God to invite the women in and that they had willingly said yes to my invitation.

The evening arrived, and as each woman walked through my door, a little more of my anxiety went away. The ladies in my living room were kind and thoughtful, sharing honest stories and connecting over topics raised by the book. We ended the evening well on our way to friendship, and we promised we’d meet again for another book club soon. I closed my door after the last woman left, thankful that I hadn’t let my fears stop me from inviting these new women into my home.

Scripture tells us to give all our worries and cares to God because he cares about us. When he asks us to do something, and we are obedient to listen, we can trust that he will be with us, no matter the outcome. Don’t let your anxiety stop you from building new friendships.
