God Is My Friend
God Is My Friend
You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!
I grew up in a church that taught me from a young age that I could talk to God anytime and anywhere. It trained me to believe that most of the thoughts that would spin around throughout my day were really just conversations with God. To me, prayer wasn’t something that I needed to set a specific time aside for—all my thoughts could be conversations with God. Because I grew up believing this, it was easy for me to think of God as my friend, as someone who cared about all of me, about the big and small things in my life.
I realize not everyone believes this. I’ve come to understand that what we were taught as children, as well as our own life experiences, can affect the way that we view God. But the Bible is very clear about the character of God. No matter what we were taught or believe, we can always hold it up against the Word of God to know if it is true. I have often had to combat some false assumption about God based on the truth of his Word, and that is a very good thing, because what the Bible says is so much better than what I could believe on my own about God!
Do you struggle to see God as your friend, or as someone who is interested in all areas of your life? Psalm 139 tells us that God is interested in every moment of our day, that he cares about all of it. We are constantly on his mind, and he is thinking good thoughts toward us! What better friend could we have than him?
