Unlikely Friends

Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

They come from all corners of Minnesota—a ragtag group of mechanics who meet together once a year with the common goal of fixing single moms’ cars—all for free. They’ve been coming to the single moms’ retreat for this purpose for almost ten years now.

Their reasons for being there are as varied as they are. Some were raised by a single mom, others have close friends or family members who are single moms, and some just want to help out in any way that they can. But no matter their reasons, their goal is the same: to bless as many single moms as possible. To do this, they show up early on a Friday afternoon and begin working as soon as the moms arrive. Taking only short breaks to eat, they work through the night, not wanting any woman’s car to be overlooked or missed. They work right up until the women are ready to leave on Saturday afternoon. Many of them faithfully come back year after year to let single moms know that they care. They’re quick to shrug off any thanks we try to bestow on them, claiming they’re simply glad they can help. Their presence reminds the women that they are loved, valued, and not forgotten.

Each year I am in awe of the men who come to show support to women they never even meet. Their commitment is admirable and worth noticing. They are literally the hands and feet of Jesus. When asked, they will tell you that they wholeheartedly believe they are taking care of widows and orphans, and they are confident their small acts of kindness please the Lord. I wholeheartedly agree. When we remember those that Scripture calls out as vulnerable, we honor God, and I believe he is pleased by our acts of kindness and friendship. Even though they’ve not met in person, these women and mechanics would call themselves friends, united in their community of support and respect for one another.
