Change Is Possible

Change Is Possible

Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Ephesians 4:21-25

A few years ago, my husband, Kyle, decided he should see a therapist. He’d had silent struggles for years that he’d dealt with alone, and after he shared them with me, we determined it might be helpful if he went to counseling.

Because it was his decision, he took it seriously. Over several months, he worked to change old patterns of thinking and behavior that he knew had never been healthy but simply familiar. As I watched Kyle learn and grow, I was appreciative, knowing he wanted to be the best possible version of himself.

But I was surprised when I’d hear him in conversation with other people about things he was learning in therapy. He wasn’t embarrassed or ashamed. He didn’t keep it a secret from anyone around us. He told me that he wanted to normalize getting help and set an example for others that it’s okay to seek out support when you need it. I was impressed by his vulnerability and willingness to allow others to see that he wasn’t perfect.

Not long ago, I told him how proud I am of him and the changes he’s been able to make. Is he perfect? No. But with God’s help and the wisdom of a counselor, he’s become healthier, healed in ways he wasn’t before.

No one is perfect. We may live out of unhealthy habits for years and wonder if we could ever be different. But God promises that change is possible. I’m thankful that when we throw off our old nature and former way of life that no longer serve us, the Holy Spirit will renew our thoughts and attitudes, allowing us to put on a new, healthier nature. God-breathed. Righteous and holy. What hope we have! We are not stuck in old patterns of thinking or living. With God’s help, change is possible.
