Famous To One

The master said, “Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!”

“What does your tattoo mean?” she asked as we were hiking a trail along one of Minnesota’s many rivers one warm May morning.

“Which one?” I said with a laugh. She pointed to my back, and I paused to explain. “Well, it’s the first tattoo I ever got. It says, ‘Famous to One.’ I got it after hearing a message about making ourselves famous to Jesus.” She nodded as I continued.

“The speaker did a great job explaining how so many people are concerned about impressing people here on earth, when our greatest desire should be that Jesus knows who we are and is proud of us. That when we get to heaven, he would hug us and say, ‘I know you.’” I turned to look at her as I finished. “Being famous to Jesus is my ultimate goal in life.”

She nodded understanding as I explained that the pastor’s words affected me, a self-proclaimed people pleaser, because what I wanted more than anything was to please Jesus in the way that I love him, love others, and share his kindness with the world. I had the phrase tattooed on my body so I would never forget what, or who, I am living for.

It’s so easy to get caught up in worrying about what others think of us, and although there’s nothing wrong with striving for a good reputation, there comes a point where we can cross over into simply trying to please people. When we remember that as believers, we want nothing more than to hear God say, “Well done,” we’ll be faithful to do what he asks of us rather than worrying about what others may say or think. And when we’re faithful to handle the small things that come our way, he’ll give us even more responsibility—increasing our witness and influence with those around us.

Do something that Jesus would be proud of you for—offer forgiveness, love someone who doesn’t deserve it, or share with someone in need. Ask God for just the right opportunity, and then take the initiative to follow through.
