Giving With Love

You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

“Do you want to see what I’ve been working on lately?” my mom asked one day. We’d been sipping coffee in her sunroom when she posed the question.

Moments later, I stared at a riot of color and patterns in the spare bedroom that doubled as her workspace. Many of her half-finished quilts and projects were pinned on the wall, while others draped over tables or racks.

“Wow,” I marveled, approaching one to take a closer look. “These are beautiful.”

My mom has been quilting for many years, and as her daughter, I’ve been lucky enough to be on the receiving end of many of her creations. I appreciate the combination of beauty and practicality, but even more, I appreciate the time that went into making them. Each one takes hours to piece together, sew, and eventually quilt. I’m grateful that she chooses to share something she’s spent so much time on with those she loves.

Just as my mom’s quilts can provide warmth and comfort, many of us have gifts and talents we can share with others. My friend Sam bakes beautiful bread that she generously gives to neighbors and friends. My friend Sandy volunteers the gift of time to help complete administrative work for a women’s ministry. My friend Steph’s best friend bakes fabulous cakes for Steph’s daughters on their birthdays.

What a joy and privilege it is for us to share with others! Whether it’s through something we’ve made, a helping hand, the gift of time, or a listening ear, we can spread beauty, hope, or love in the world. Rather than feeling pressured to give, let’s consider our talents and skills as part of the blessing that our generous God has endowed us with, and let’s use them to honor him. Everything we have and do is a resource. When we choose to serve others or give them something we’ve created, we bless the recipients and demonstrate the same care for them that Jesus has shown to us.
