His Good Gifts

Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

“I hope you are okay with this office; I know it’s busy near the elevator.”

The rest of his words were lost on me as I stared at what was going to be my very own office. Brick walls and an entire wall of windows stretching from the floor to the impossibly tall ceiling had me grinning from ear to ear. The trees just outside framed a beautiful view of the college campus where I’d be teaching. It was better than I could ever have imagined.

And the busy hallway with an elevator and stairwell just steps from my door was the perfect location for this extrovert who keeps a bowl of chocolates on the corner of her desk and leaves her door open, hoping to lure in passing faculty and students alike.

The very features that bothered other faculty members, marking my new office as the least desirable on the second floor of our historic building, were the same features I loved most about it. Every time I step into that beautiful space, I thank God for his goodness and for the gift of a beautiful place to write and work after years without a dedicated space.

And isn’t that the amazing thing about gifts from God? He knows what delights us, what makes us laugh, and how our hearts are encouraged and comforted, and he sends those gifts to us. They might be as significant as a lovely office of our very own or as simple as a funny note from a friend we’ve been missing on a harder-than-average day. God’s gifts are good and perfect and a reminder that we have a heavenly Father who sees us, knows us, loves us.
