Our Faithful God

The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding.

I made supper for a friend who lost her father suddenly. She’s from a war-torn country and had fled to America with her immediate family, leaving her dad behind. She hadn’t seen him in several years, and she grieved the loss, knowing she’d never again have the chance to see him in this life.

She greeted me at the door and I placed the meal on the table, then we sat down on the couch to catch up.

“How are you doing?” I asked, squeezing her hand.

“Okay,” she said, shrugging. “I cry a lot.”

“That’s okay,” I said. “Tell me about your dad.”

“You know,” she responded, “a memory came to me I hadn’t thought about in years.”

I waited while she wiped her eyes and went on to explain.

She said she was in her late teens, and some troops came through their city, pillaging and taking anything from the homes that they wanted. She was upset because they had taken many of her family’s belongings, including her gold jewelry.

She was so troubled over the loss that she cried. Her dad came to her and said, “Why do you cry? These are just things. We can’t hang on to the things of this world so tightly that we can’t let them go. Even our family members: we can love them, but not to the point of not letting go. Only God we hang on to—he is all we have in life. Everything else could be gone at any moment.”

Now, as an adult with a family of her own, she knows his words were true. I agreed—such a wise man.

As I left her home, I thought about her father and the insight he gave her all those years ago. So much in this life can be uncertain. We can believe we have control, but in reality, many things can change without our consent. When times are unsure, what do we have to cling to?

The answer is clear: hold only onto God. He is everlasting. He isn’t weak and doesn’t grow weary. Everything else in this life can change—it all may come and go—but he remains.
