Our Steady Father
Our Steady Father
God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?
It was almost the end of the school day, and as the intercom crackled to life, I knew what was coming: Valentine’s Day gifts. As the long list of names from each grade was read, students shifted uneasily in their chairs or waited breathlessly to see if they would be one of the lucky ones. When the bell rang, everyone rushed to the lobby, where tables were filled with bouquets organized by last name.
I always had my name called. It wasn’t because I was popular or always had a boyfriend. No, it was all thanks to my dad. I can’t remember if I initially asked him to send me something or if he came up with the idea on his own—likely with my mom’s help—but either way, it sparked a new tradition. Every year, he sent a bouquet to the school. As the names were called, I never worried about being left out. I knew my dad would send me something, just as he’d promised.
I’m grateful for those gifts of flowers, but looking back, I’m more thankful for the steadiness my dad’s actions displayed. Like the sun rising and setting each day or the tides advancing and receding, his faithful efforts were a reminder that he could be trusted. His word was true. He would do as he said, and I didn’t need to worry.
Unfortunately, I know that’s not always the case with earthly fathers. But I’m grateful for the faithfulness of another Father, one whose Word is always true. He, too, delights in giving us good gifts. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is just, good, and trustworthy. When we consider our fast-paced, ever-changing world, that steadiness is a gift we can rely on. With God as our Father, we never need worry about being left out or forgotten. And at the end of the day, we’ll hear our name called too.
