Real Talk

You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

It was a busy Monday morning, and our earlier communication had been curt. My friend and I were upset with one another, and it was showing. I decided to call her instead of continuing to communicate through text, which only seemed to be adding to our misunderstanding and hurt feelings.

“I just feel abandoned,” she said as she burst into tears over the phone. My initial annoyance dissipated as my own throat clenched with emotion in response to her honest confession.

“It’s okay,” I responded as we discussed an issue that we’d both miscommunicated to one another. Before we hung up, I quickly added, “You are not alone. I’m here. I’m with you. I love you.”

“Love you too,” she whispered as we both cried for a moment together before ending the call.

It was only a few minutes of conversation, but it was just enough to cover over any hard feelings and remind each other of the truth. We love each other. We are there for each other. We always want good things for each other. We are friends. I texted her again a little while later, reminding her of what she means to me.

Sometimes we need those around us to tell us what is true. Life circumstances can throw us curveballs that we weren’t expecting, leaving us reeling, unable to fully remember what is true. But when we know the truth, it will set us free.

And what is the truth we can gratefully cling to today? We are loved. We are chosen. We have good work to do. We can walk in peace and love. We are called by name. No one can remove us from our Father’s hand.

So many good things that God promises to each of us. They are all true. And that knowledge does set us free.
