The Comfort Of Being Known
The Comfort of Being Known
O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.
My kids love selling items door to door. As a shy child who once hated participating in fundraisers, I don’t completely understand it, but I’ve come to accept it. Whether it’s chocolate bars, nuts, or Girl Scout cookies, all three of my children are thrilled to go from one house to the next, asking if the person would like to support their school or troop.
It takes courage to knock on someone’s door, but I think what tips the balance for my kids is knowing that they’re welcome. Our house is located on a quiet cul-de-sac, and we’ve lived here since 2010. Most of our neighbors have known my daughters since they toddled around as babies and have spent the last decade watching them doodle chalk creations on the driveway, race their bikes on the street, or trudge each morning to the bus stop. They’ve seen them sled down the hill created by the snowplow, argue with each other, or run through sprinklers on hot summer days. They’ve let my daughters pet their animals, fed them ice cream and snacks, and listened to them talk incessantly while they weeded their gardens. Over time, those shared memories add up. And as a result, when my children knock on doors to ask about Girl Scout cookies, they are warmly welcomed.
What a comfort there is in being known.
In the same way, you and I can experience that level of comfort in our relationship with Jesus. We need not approach him with hat in hand, unsure of our welcome. The Bible details how God knows everything about us—not so he can trip us up or shame us, but because of his great love for us. He goes before and behind us, and his hand of blessing is upon us. What a loving Father we have. I’m thankful that he knows us completely and always welcomes us into a relationship with him.
