The Gift Of Knowledge

The Gift of Knowledge

Don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.

Hebrews 13:16

“Mom, how do I make tea?” The call had come in while I was helping at an event, and I left the noisy hubbub of volunteers to find a quiet room. Sinking into a chair, I clutched the phone as my daughter repeated her question. “I wasn’t sure if I just turn the kettle on or if I have to do something else.”

Smiling, I gave her a few basic instructions and hung up, returning to my work.

It seems like a simple thing, but it makes a difference when someone is willing to share their knowledge. Whether it’s a tip about a new restaurant to check out, a stain remover that works, or a show we enjoyed watching, passing along what we have learned reveals a generosity of spirit that is always a reason to be grateful, regardless of whether we are the recipient or the one who provides the information.

The first time I made chicken noodle soup from scratch, I was overwhelmed at the thought of working with a whole chicken. It looked huge. I didn’t know if I needed to clean the inside or if I had to cut it up before cooking it. I was so nervous that I called my mom at least five times to ask her advice. Each time, she patiently answered my questions and reassured me that I could do it. I was so thankful that she had taken the time to bolster my flagging spirits and send me back to the recipe. By the time it was ready, soup had never tasted so good.

While sharing with others can often involve our time or treasure, sometimes it simply requires our knowledge. Let’s not waste the wealth of life experience we carry; instead, let’s pass it on. Being willing to come alongside someone else and offer our expertise allows us to provide hope or reassurance to a person who may be struggling. It also reminds us that we matter and are uniquely positioned to help those around us. During his ministry on earth, Jesus often shared his knowledge in parables that made it easy for his followers to recognize what he meant and apply the concepts to their daily life. When we follow his lead by sharing our knowledge, everyone benefits.
