As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
Proverbs 27:17
DAN FELT THAT HIS WORLD was coming apart. The results were back from a recent battery of tests for his two-year-old son, and his worst fears were realized. This news completed the trifecta in his life, adding the serious illness of a child to the marital struggles between his wife and him and the financial pressure they were facing because of his recent layoff. Dan had no idea how he was going to pay for the expensive treatments his son would soon need. Scared, alone, and feeling overwhelmed by negative emotion, Dan did something he had never done. He reached out to his friend Steve and told him exactly what he was facing. Dan was shocked to discover how much his perspective changed by simply putting into words what he was feeling and having someone else listen.
It’s easy to fall for the lie that says men are supposed to be strong no matter what life throws our way. But Scripture makes it clear that God never intended for us to bear life’s burdens alone. He has promised to be with us, but we also need fellowship with other Christian men who can love, support, and counsel us when life is hard. A sure sign of strength is knowing when to reach out to others.
What are you trying to face alone right now? Think about a guy you can call and bring into your struggle. The enemy may tell you that nobody cares, but that’s just another lie. Reach out for help.
