Don’t Forget Thanksgiving
Don’t Forget Thanksgiving
Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor
and power and strength belong to our God forever and ever! Amen.
Revelation 7:12
IT’S EASY TO OVERLOOK the Thanksgiving holiday. As soon as Halloween costumes come off the store shelves, Christmas decorations go up. And the United States isn’t the only Christmas-enthused culture. In the Philippines, radio stations start playing carols as early as September. Of course, they don’t have a Thanksgiving holiday to celebrate there.
The original Thanksgiving festival started on December 13, 1621. The pilgrims gathered with their Native American friends to feast for three days and celebrate God’s goodness and provision.
Today, Thanksgiving barely lasts through the afternoon, with some stores opening for Christmas shopping later in the day.
Sadly, it’s easy for thanksgiving to get pushed out of the way in our own lives, too. We take God’s blessings for granted. We believe in our abilities to “make things happen” rather than trusting God’s gracious provision. We don’t thank Him enough for His love and grace.
During this important season, we need to pause and be thankful. The apostle John describes a scene in which God is being worshiped with the words: “Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and strength belong to our God forever and ever!” (Revelation 7:12). We will be thanking God for all eternity, and the time to get started with that is today and every day of the year.
BOTTOM LINE
God deserves our thankfulness. Strive to show it to Him on a daily basis.
