No Other Gospel

I am amazed that you are so quickly turning away from Him who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—not that there is another gospel.

THERE IS SOMETHING IN us that seeks new things all the time. We crave novelty. We get tired of the same old truths we think we know all too well. We want something fresh and different. In some areas of life this may not be a bad thing, but when it comes to the gospel, we must be careful.

The church in Galatia had started to drift away from the simplicity of the gospel, and the apostle Paul felt the need to write a correction. He knew and taught that the only true gospel was the one he preached—a gospel of grace, not works. Moreover, he was amazed that the Galatians would turn from this gospel so quickly. Why the amazement? Because deviations from the gospel are always harmful. The gospel produces life and freedom; any departure from it puts people right back into the bondage of performance-based living rather than faith in God.

To say that the gospel doesn’t change is not to say that it is dry and boring—it is anything but that. Moralism—trying to do good things to appease God—is dreadfully dry and boring (not to mention exhausting). The gospel, on the other hand, is the most exciting news ever revealed to man, and it is news that affects how we live. In fact, the gospel produces far greater life change than moralism ever could. We must keep exposing ourselves to its truth. And we should ask God to help us remember it.

BOTTOM LINE

There is only one gospel, and we should thank God for that. Cling to the gospel. Believe the Good News—and share it with others!
