Our True Identity

Because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.

Galatians 4:6-7

KEVIN COULDN’T BELIEVE what was happening to him. Panic and gut-wrenching fear swept over him as he left his boss’s office with the dreaded pink slip in his hand. All he could think about as he staggered back to his cubicle was how he was going to tell his wife that he had been downsized after twenty years of loyal service. So much of his identity was wrapped up in his job that he wasn’t sure he knew who he was apart from being an accountant.

What about you? Where do you find your identity? Where do you find your value? You may call yourself an accountant, a doctor, a sales professional, a student, a devoted husband, a retired executive, or a farmer. But just as Dan discovered, any of these titles could be gone in a matter of minutes. Now who are you? What is your value? There is only one identity that is unshakable and everlasting. That is your identity in Christ.

Knowing who you are and whose you are brings a confidence into your life that cannot be taken away. Your career may change; you may acquire or lose your skills; your relationships with others might change. But your identity in Christ is permanent.

Have you allowed your identity to be tied too closely to your achievements and occupation? Take some time to reflect on what it means to be an heir to God’s Kingdom.
