Rise Up!

Stand up in the presence of the elderly, and show respect for the aged. Fear your God. I am the LORD.

Leviticus 19:32

IT MAY BE PART OF the Old Testament law, but it’s still a valuable principle for life. One of the ways we show reverence for God is to honor our elders. And this takes us back to our parenting skills.

First, we model what we want our children to become. In this case, demonstrating care and concern for older people is important. Our children need to see that the value of a life is not dependent on how much a person can accomplish or how much money he or she makes. The elderly deserve our respect and love simply for being created in the image of God. Besides, we are not in a position to evaluate someone else’s contributions to society. There’s no limit to what someone can accomplish simply by praying.

Second, just as we strive to create a warm, safe environment of unconditional love for our children, we must do the same for our elders. It’s easy to feel discouraged after your career is finished and your health begins to diminish. Insecurities can rise to the surface, and sometimes even personalities can change. We need God’s help to love others well.

When we respect our elders and obey God’s command to honor them, we teach our children about unconditional love. And our obedience pleases God and deepens our relationship with Him.

BOTTOM LINE

Honor your father and mother in their old age. It honors them and God, and sets a good example for your children.
