Straight As An Arrow

Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him. Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior’s hands.

Psalm 127:3-4

TO SAY THAT A MAN IS “straight as an arrow” means he’s a man of honor and integrity. It tells us he is living a life above reproach. His life is honest, trustworthy, and dependable.

Arrows—even handcrafted ones from ages past—require careful attention to detail to ensure optimal performance. The shaft of the best arrow is perfectly straight. If an arrow is to hit its mark, it takes more than simply pulling back on the bowstring. To do its job, an arrow must also have a sharp, hard tip capable of piercing its target to the core.

To maintain a straight path, the arrow depends on fletching, which are feathers that keep it balanced and true in its flight. Finally, while the arrow itself needs these qualities, it also requires a good marksman in order to hit its target.

A good archer needs training and practice if his arrows are going to fulfill their intended purpose. In the same way, a successful dad makes sure to get his training by spending time in the Bible each day, praying regularly, and practicing discipline in his own life. To truly teach his children, a man must not only instruct with words but also model with his life. When he does that, his words will have much more authenticity and power. Your kids need your involvement and direction, or they will fly off in the wrong direction. Ask God for help.
