The Way Of Rescue

The secret counsel of the LORD is for those who fear Him, and He reveals His covenant to them. My eyes are always on the LORD, for He will pull my feet out of the net.

FRIENDS SHARE THEIR hearts with one another. And Jesus calls us His friends: “I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me” (John 15:15). That might be one of the most encouraging verses in all of the Bible. We can count the Lord Jesus among our friends—we’re not just His servants, but His friends. Remarkable.

We see the same thing in Psalm 25:14: “The secret counsel of the LORD is for those who fear Him” (HCSB). God reveals His heart and ways to those who fear Him, to those who want to know Him and walk with Him, and He is their friend. This is really what the Christian life is all about—knowing God, walking with Him, and sharing His love with others. That’s what love looks like, and that’s the sum of the law and what God desires of us.

Practically speaking, the way to stay close to God is to constantly look to Him for help, counsel, encouragement, fellowship—whatever we need. Jesus puts it like this in John 15:5: “I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” So in this Old Testament psalm, we see essentially the same thing that Jesus teaches in John 15—that we should look to Him and walk with Him.

BOTTOM LINE

God desires that we walk with Him as friends, listening and sharing life together. Our focus should be on Him rather than on ourselves.
