What Is God Really Like?

The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God.

Hebrews 1:3

LOOKING INTO A VAST, silent, star-filled sky, countless souls have wondered, “What is God really like? Does He understand me? Does He care? Is He forever disappointed with me? Mad at me? Can He ever smile on me? Does He like me? How can I know when I can’t see Him with my eyes, touch Him with my hands, or hear Him with my ears? Do I just take my best guess? Imagine? How will I ever know?”

Today’s passage says that Jesus “expresses the very character of God.” If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. More than all the prophets who have ever lived, Jesus has made God understandable. Because of His great love for us, He willingly endured unimaginable suffering on the cross to secure our salvation. The Cross shows the depths of God’s love for us in the clearest way possible.

We sometimes create an artificial disconnect between Jesus and the Father. This is especially true for men who had an angry, abusive, absent, or emotionally distant father. In our minds, we can understand that God is committed to us, but we may feel an emotional connection to Jesus (a “big brother” role) while we feel distant from God in His Father role. But the heart of the Father and the heart of Jesus beat as one. If you want to get to know God, get to know Jesus, who said, “The Father and I are one” (John 10:30).

BOTTOM LINE

Jesus is the revelation of God. He shows us what the Father is really like. Ask God to help you see Him clearly.
