AFTER TIGER WOODS shocked the golf world with his first Masters victory in 1997, he requested that the traditional green jacket be tailored several sizes larger than he wore. Following the 2002 event, observers realized the golfing superstar had made a wise decision.

The 2002 tournament witnessed three of the soggiest days in Augusta National history. Rain interrupted the second round, forcing 26 holes to be played on Saturday. At the end of the marathon day, Woods and U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen were tied for the lead at 205.

But on Sunday, the weather turned perfect. The sun shone, the azaleas glowed, and the fairways shimmered. But for some reason, only Woods took advantage of the serene scene.

Woods gained three strokes on Goosen in the first three holes of Sunday’s round and never let go of his lead. Although he shot only a 1-under-par 71, the PGA’s five top-ranked golfers behind Woods combined for rounds totaling 9-over.

Woods claimed his third Masters title by finishing 12-under-par and became the first golfer to garner back-to-back crowns on the fabled course since Nick Faldo won in 1989 and 1990. The 26-year-old also earned the distinction of becoming the youngest golfer to win seven major tournaments, joining the elite group of Bobby Jones, Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, and Arnold Palmer.
